This retrospective exhibition includes more than 100 works of art including watercolor, oil, pastel and ink drawings, wood sculpture, a display of sketchbooks, and diary entries from artistic journeys and charitable associations. Seen together, these components form a narrative of a life defined by art, the love of nature, and the value of service to those in need. From the grasslands of Africa to the prairies of Nebraska, Schilling captured his encounters through beautifully wrought sketchbooks and impressionistic landscapes. With written reflections and descriptions of places and experiences, this body of work shows the discipline that guided his artistic study and the inspiration behind these remarkable paintings. Schilling’s journey encompasses the pursuit of worldly experiences; a spiritual voyage of understanding and growth; and an artistic drive that continues on through this legacy of creativity.
Dr. Richard Schilling was born and raised in Nebraska and earned his bachelor’s and doctorate of dental surgery degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Now retired from dentistry, Dr. Schilling is a lifelong artist. He has authored several articles and books about painting and sketching, including Portraits of the Prairie (University of Nebraska Press, 2011) and Watercolor Journeys, (North Light Books, 2003). Schilling has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Nebraska, New York, Texas, and Northern Colorado. He has received the Arts for the Parks Top One Hundred award twice, in 1996 and 2004, a national recognition awarded by the National Park Academy of the Arts, and was chosen Artist-in-Residence at Mesa Verde National Park in 2006. Schilling lives in Loveland, Colorado.
